BATTLE of WALLINGFORD 27 - 28 JUNE

Postby dereklester » 30 May 2015, 23:38

Wallingford – Oxon Town Centre
Friday 26th June 2015 Parliament’s officers confronted the Royalists in the town of Wallingford and demanded they surrender the castle. After much shouting they returned to camp for much drinking, eating and making merry.
On Saturday 27th June 2015 the Big Guns were brought up to batter the Castle walls. This caused the Royalists to sally forth from the castle to beat off the attackers.
Saturday night the local taverns were full to bursting with 17th century soldiers doing what comes naturally; drinking and making merry.
On Sunday morning the troops were out on Castle Meadow preparing for the final attack on the castle. The Royalists fought bravely to hold off the besiegers. But with no reinforcements the Royalists position was hopeless so terms were agreed for an honourable surrender.
