Living History

Colonel John Hampden's Regiment of Foote are particularly proud of their Living History section. What is a Living History? It's an event where visitors can meet characters from the past at close quarters. It could take place in the setting of a military campsite, or in an historic house Wilberforce House in Hull, and Aston Hall in Birmingham, are just two of the places where we have presented prestigious events.

The visitor, whether attending independently or as part of a school group, will discover different 'stations' throughout the site, where a character from the past will explain his or her skills and their role in Tudor or Stuart society. You might meet the smiths at work in their forge, an apothecary dispensing old remedies, a cook preparing period food for his masters, soldiers in the ale house and many more.

Our 'living historians' know their world. Both their knowledge and their equipment are extensive, ensuring that Hampden's always provide an educational and authentic, yet friendly and entertaining display.

And if this side of Hampden's life appeals to you, then welcome. You would start as an assistant at one of the existing stations, as a guide, or even just as an 'extra'. Incidentally this is where the children in the regiment can play their part as well! As your knowledge and experience grows you might have your own idea for a new station, perhaps reflecting your own interests. Your colleagues would give you all possible help to turn that idea into reality.
